History, culture and wonders | Marca Fermana - Culture
The cultural heritage of Marca Fermana divides its treasures into numerous subject areas: mainly architecture and paintings that find their origins from the historical past of the territory. The Roman churches, the well preserved palazzi of nobles, the paintings and the murals of valuable artistic content, the theatres, the libraries and the museums. A heritage spread throughout the Fermano area in an almost continuous itinerary of wonders to be discovered.
The cultural heritage in the Province of Fermo is one of the richest and most visited in Italy.
The ancient origins of the Marca Fermana (certified by a “diploma” of the Longbard Emperor Ottone II dated 983 a. C.) are witnessed by various archaeological sites: Falerio Picenus, which is the present town of Falerone and the archaeological site in the locality la Cuma of Monte Rinaldo, in which a sanctuary of late republican era was found, going back to II-I century b. C. During the Summer periods both archaeological sites are the frameworkto performances and concerts tied to their artistic and historical period.
In the ancient medieval 'borghi' of the province of Fermo one can discover Roman churches of great artistic content with mural paintings of the 13th & 14th century depicting images tied to the Christian religion. The Fermano territory is the birthplace of important artists such as Vincenzo Pagani and Osvaldo Licini and it has hosted two famous Veneto artists Vittore and Carlo Crivelli, of the latter some works of art are also exhibited in the London National Gallery.
Since long ago the historical theatres, like the Teatro dell'Aquila in Fermo and the Teatro D. Alaleona of Montegiorgio have been important meeting places and forums, and even nowadays, they host theatre seasons of opera and prose renowned at national levels.
Particularly interesting are also the small museums and libraries that document the local history and the important leading historical books of a national calibre (Sala del Mappamondo di Palazzo dei Priori a Fermo).
