HEADQUARTERS AND COLLECTIONS PRESERVED

The library is in a historic building, formerly the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore (sec. XIV); in 1904 it had been assigned as a Kindergarten and later in 2000 used as a library. Arranged on two floors, with open shelves and balconies encircling the perimeter of the two halls, the structure presents a conception of good usability with a division of public spaces that facilitates the different users' needs. The library presents a typology of a general kind, with open access to all internal bibliographic information and loan services. The book heritage consists of about 18,000 documents with 50 national and local periodicals. In one year, the volume of loans is around 2000, with an average of 3500 in attendance. Among other sections present, the library has an extensive local collection and a good significant youth section. In 2001, through a donation, a collection of scientific background of major importance was acquired from the Gazzani family of Montegranaro: the donation was made in memory of Fabio Gazzani, the bioengineer who prematurely passed away and to whom the scientific section of the library has been named after.

The municipal library occupies a place of great importance, at the access zone to the historic centre and to the Piazza, ideally, it stands as the cultural structure aimed at enhancing all that has been preserved of historic and artistic value. The building therefore has become the cultural pole of Montegranaro and the historical memory of its past. It is home to the activities of the Study Centre of the Montegranaro inhabitants; from here the knowledge, the protection and the enhancement of the heritage will be promoted; in program periodically, as has already been done recently, editorial initiatives are planned, aimed at the knowledge and at the disclosure of aspects of local history, together with the town’s institutions, which are dedicated to this.

The relevant activities of the library structure are carried out according to the following guidelines:

A. To use the book heritage to its best advantage, through a very simple and straightforward service of access to documents for the users. To Increment the Youth section, who are the main users of the library and to whom the structure caters for with a strong animation towards reading and books.

B. Enhancement of the endowments and the documents through systematic themed studies, entrusted to the young undergraduates so as to reach the progressive study and the publishing of the archival deposits. For this purpose an award for young graduates has been established for those who have done their dissertations on various topics related to the town of Montegranaro.

C. Enhancement of the historical and artistic heritage of Montegranaro by launching projects aimed at its further knowledge with the involvement of all citizens and, in particular, of the school population.
