Historical Notes

The territory that stretches between Fermo and the River Aso, not very far from the sea, bears traces, as does all of the Picenum area, of colonization and therefore of Roman civilization.  Perhaps the most notable evidence of this is expressed by the memorial stone of a local magistrate preserved under the municipal portico.  During the High Middle Ages the Lombards and the Avellaniti Monks founded various castles, the churches of which, in Romanic style, are still well preserved.  During the XIII century the scattered settlements were abandoned and the present day town was born on the highest hill (m. 264 over the sea level) and in the proximity of a large watch tower (also well preserved and transformed in time into the majestic bell tower in the Collegiate of San Lorenzo).

Monuments and Churches

- Church of  San Nicolò,  XVII-XVIII century, in the central piazza, in perfect and sober baroque style, internally it has 5 altars in golden and marbleized wood, a wooden damascated ceiling and an altar-piece by Simone De Magistris (presently preserved in the municipal palazzo), besides an organ of  the caladium school.
- Church of San Lorenzo, with valuable golden wooden baroque altars, a XVI century wooden crucifix and an organ of 1700 of Gaetano Callido, now brought back to life for concert activities.
