Historical Notes
Montefalcone, ancient town perched on the edge of a high fossiliferous sandstone cliff, is positioned at an altitude of 758 m. over sea level on the southern side of the homonymous mountain.  Right from the X century AD the town was included in the territory of the Farfense garrison and from 1214, year in which it obtained its Municipality Autonomy, for more than 100 years, it was the scene of wars and occupations by the Fermano and by the town of Ascoli Piceno.  Montefalcone offers its visitors an extraordinary panorama: from the Sibillini mountains to the Maiella, from the Gran Sasso to the Monte Conero and the Adriatic Sea. Surrounded by green areas, it is the ideal place for all those looking for a totally relaxing holiday in contact with nature, history and culture.  The wood which covers most of Monte Falcone, for the variety of its plant species is a Protected Flora Area and place of Community importance.  Worthy of interest are the fossiliferous areas rich in findings which go back to the lower Pliocene.  In the historical center, at the Palazzo Felici, a noble residence which goes back to the  XVII century, it is possible to visit the Museum Center, with sections dedicated to local fossils, to fossils from all over the world and of all ages, and to minerals.  Relevant to the Museum is the   “Giardino Tronelli” (Tronelli Gardens) which descends with natural winding paths born along the cliff of the mountain.   At the Palazzo Fenici the Polyptech of the “Madonna con bambino” (1475/1480) by the Artist Pietro Alamanno is viewable.  The museum structure is also home to an Environmental Educational Center, equipped to supply didactical services to schools and to organized groups.  In the highest part of the town the ancient Farfense Castle and its recently restored sole tower, rises up in a predominantly pinpointing way.  Not far away from the inhabited area appears  the Franciscan Convent, bought by San Francesco d’Assisi in 1223, just a few steps away from the miraculous drinking fountain that the Saint originated and from which fresh and limpid water flows.
