Historical Notes
The historic centre of Campofilone rises up on the top of a small hill, overlooking the Adriatic Sea at just 200 meters over the sea level.  It shows an elliptical formation,   a characteristic of small locations which developed on the inside of the castle walls around the XI century.  The street that cuts the town down the centre goes from the Abbaziale (Abbey) Church to Porta Marina (Gateway Entrance); the two elliptical secondary roads (because they are parallel to the walls that are only partially preserved) result in the lower part being more or less trapezoidal. The town has developed from a ‘borgo’, established in the height of the Middle Ages around the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Bartholomew. In the XII century the monastery was dependant to the Fermo episcopate where it remained until 1342.  La Via degli Orti with a barrel vault, the Viale dei Pini and the tower of Porta Marina, Porta da Sole and Porta da Bora are very obvious traces from the past.  The Abbaziale Church, rebuilt in the second half of the XIX century, is shaped like a greek cross.  It was frescoed by Fontana and decorated with figures of saints, drapes and precious marbles by his scholar Nicola Achilli.  The frescoes in the church of St. Patrizio are also by Fontana.
The Sagra of ‘Maccheroncini’ (the local festival of the town’s specialties): Campofilone is now famous for its “Maccheroncini”, typical egg pasta made entirely by hand with rare craftsmanship by the women of the town.  The very thin ‘sfoglia’ is then cut into very fine golden threads and carefully placed onto sheets of paper.  Every year, during the first 10 days in August, the famous National Sagra is dedicated to the ‘Maccheroncini’, for which the request has been put forward for the IGP community acknowledgement.
