The Municipal historical archives, formally established in 1997, holds a large parchment and paper documentary heritage that bears witness to the political, economical and administrative community of S. Elpidio a Mare and its territory since the IX century: the diplomatic collection with Imperial and papal documents, notarial deeds of the IX-XIX centuries (the so-called Secret Archive), the administrative documentation produced over time by the Institution (correspondence, accountancy records, acts of the decision-making bodies) and currently available for consultation until 1910.
It also preserves the archives of the Arch-confraternity of Santa Maria della Misericordia (documents and logs from 1497 to 1854), the private archives of the poet Luigi Cicconi (Sant'Elpidio a Mare, 1804 – Mortara, 1856), of the violoncellist from Sant’Elpidio Tito Rosati (Umbertide, 1881 – 1954), of the family of the Marquis Bartolucci Godolini (XVIII-XX century) and the archive of the Conciliatory Judge’s Office operating in Sant'Elpidio a Mare and in the Sub-Section of Porto Sant'Elpidio (1866-1951).
It is to be noted that among these documents are included the printed volume of the Municipal Statute, year 1571, the diploma of Emperor Ottone I dated 968 and that of Frederico II of Svevia dated 1250, a signed letter of Giuseppe Garibaldi, dated 1872 and a signed letter by Alessandro Manzoni, dated 1875.
